The chapter was chartered by seven men, Mario Bonner, Kendrick Christie, Christopher Gantt, Jonathon Gordon, Thomas O'Banner, Michael Thom, and Andre Weans.  The Chapter functions under the guidance of the Omicron Tau Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. - the Aiken graduate chapter. In 2002, the chapter went a rebuilding phase where the membership collasped to zero active brothers on campus.  However, in 2005 the re-emergence of the Sigma Tau chapter brought forth a great awakening on campus.  Now the chapter is more vital and active than and proves to be a viable force on campus and in the commuity. The brothers remain active in the fraternity's national programming and many local projects.  To name a few; weekly volunteers at the  The Boys and Girls Club, The united Way's Brothers and Sisters of Aiken County,  East Aiken Elementary's Quest Zone program, Leavelle McCampbell Middle School's Gentlemen's Club, Aiken Youth Empowerment and Teen Pregnancy Prevention, The Aiken Autism Association, The Cumbee Center to Assisted Abused Persons, The March of Dimes, the National Society of Black Engineers and many other activities. Recently the chapter was recognized as the top fundraiser of South Carolina Alpha Chapter for the March of Dimes Annual Campaign; the only undergraduate chapter ever awarded this feat. . The Sigma Tau Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated is a resilient chapter that holds high the light of Alpha and will continue this great work for years to come.

Each year The Sigma Tau Chapter hosts the annual Miss Black and Gold Scholarship Pageant.  The reigning queen is Miss Jillian Gaymon of Columbia, South Carolina.
